On March 28th, 2025, a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, with the epicenter located near Mandalay, one of the country’s largest cities. The earthquake caused widespread destruction, leading to thousands of confirmed deaths and countless injuries, as well as major infrastructure damage across the region.
Among those affected are local orphanages, including facilities run by the Servite Sisters and other humanitarian organizations. We are incredibly thankful to report that St. Mary’s Home, located some distance from the epicenter, did not suffer any injuries. However, the orphanage has sustained significant structural damage, including:
- Cracked floors and damaged ceilings
- Extensive damage to residential housing for children and staff
- Structural damage to chicken coops and food storage buildings
- Road damage leading to and from the facility
- Severe destruction to the gardens that help feed the children
- Collapse of the shrimp pond and freshwater reservoirs
These damages directly impact the daily lives and long-term well-being of the children who rely on St. Mary’s for shelter, nourishment, and education. The estimated cost of repairs is $50,000 USD, a daunting figure for a small, sister-run facility, especially amid a country-wide recovery effort.
